Writing essays is one of the skills considered absolutely critical for students to master to be successful in IB and IGCSE exams. When it comes to your subjects such as English Literature, Global Perspectives, Extended Essay etc, being able to write a strong, coherent essay is a game changer in helping to raise your grades. Below are some guidelines as to how students can think about their essay writing in a more professional way.
1. Fully Understand the Question
Before you even start writing your essay, take the time to think about and unpack the essay prompt thoroughly. Look at the command terms you have to interpret, such as, evaluate, discuss, compare or analyze. Knowing what you are being tasked to do will set the direction for your argument and keep you on track.
2. Plan before you write
An adage says that “a great essay starts with a great plan.” A plan or outline can be divided into three parts – introduction, body, and conclusion. Jot down key points, examples and quotes so that your ideas remain organized and sensible.
3. Create a Thesis statement
Your thesis is the heart of your essay – a clear, succinct summary of your main argument in one line (ideally). A powerful thesis directs your focus and establishes significance and structure to your writing.
4. Incorporate Evidence and Examples
Ensure that every claim is supported by relevant textual evidence, case studies, or, if appropriate, real-world examples. Citing evidence draws from the evidence-based process that underpins the rationale of critical thinking. Furthermore, in assignments in IB and IGCSE, where critical thinking is encouraged, using a credible source creates complexity and authenticity in writing.
5. Revise
After you complete your overall essay, revise the essay and each paragraph for clarity, coherence, and grammatical proficiency. Often, it helps to read your essay aloud to catch awkward word choices and increase the flow of the writing.
